“The patterns of activity of neurons in sensory areas can be altered by patterns of attention. Experience coupled with attention leads to physical changes in the structure and future functioning of the nervous system.
This leaves us with a clear physiological fact: moment by moment we choose and sculpt how our ever-changing minds will work. We choose who we will be in the next moment in a very real sense, and these choices are left embossed in physical form in our material selves.”
― Michael Merzenich, Soft-Wired: How the New Science of Brain Plasticity Can Change Your Life
One of the most common challenges my clients face is negative self-talk and a sense of helplessness. . They find themselves going down a spiral of self-defeating, energy-depleting thoughts that are full of self doubt and self-criticism.
Some of my clients don’t even realize that they are stuck in this type of thinking because it’s so common to them that it feels familiar. Other clients don’t believe another way of feeling and thinking is possible, or they do think it’s possible, but they don’t know HOW to change their thoughts.
To get out of this, we can harness the power of neuroplasticity.
Part of this is understanding this simple fact: our thoughts are electrochemical firing patterns. They are often powerfully influenced by many factors, including our childhood experiences, current social environments, as well as physical, sleep and dietary factors.
But as much as environmental factors play a role… if we want to improve our lives, we must ALSO make an effort to change our brain activity.
The beauty of the human mind is that we HAVE the power to update its activity and algorithms.
We can - with awareness and practice - change our brain activity to work in our favor and move us into an improved neurochemical state that helps us achieve more of what we want.
We can re-wire our brain based on WHAT WE PAY ATTENTION TO.
To re-wire our brain away from negativity and self-criticism, we must re-direct our attention.
This video will give you 3 specific ideas to help you do this.
