Self-Esteem has a lot to do with how we see ourselves.
So does narcissism.
But there is a KEY difference in what this self image is.
High levels of self-esteem I are related to lower levels of depression and anxiety, and stronger abilities to cope with life’s stressors. Narcissism has a key feature that distinguishes it from self-esteem, which I go into in this video.
These key differences between narcissism and self-esteem are explored in research as having some connections to our early socialization experiences.
As with all human traits and behaviors, there is no simplistic cause-effect relationships and explanations, and we all possess at least a little bit of everything. But understanding these key differences and possible early influences can help us better recogniz our own patterns and what we notice in others.
That understanding can be a first step towards finding ways to increase self-esteem as a powerful pillar of mental health and wellbeing.
Thank you to the INCREDIBLE group of learners who joined together with me for October’s seminar on Neuroplasticity. Your thoughtful questions and insight-filled discussions inspired me for how much we can evolve our own lives by coming together in intentional ways to learn about the human mind.
November’s seminar is an important one. We’ll be learning about regulating our emotions and mastering our desired internal state. We’ll look not only about how the mind-brain-body system experiences and regulates emotions from a neurophysiological perspective, but also how deep-seated beliefs and existential fears play a role in anxiety and mental health challenges.
