When something doesn't work .. a message ignored, a person who won't engage, an idea that goes nowhere
.. most of us read it as failure.
The brain reads it that way too. And there's a reason.
Deep in the brain sits a small structure called the habenula.
One of its jobs is to track how things turn out.
When a reward comes in smaller than expected — when effort meets rejection, or hope meets disappointment-the habenula fires and quiets the dopamine systems that give us drive and forward momentum (Matsumoto & Hikosaka, 2007).
So that flat, deflated, why-bother feeling after a setback is wiring at work .. a built-in response designed to make us pause and recalculate.
Once you understand this, something has a chance of opening up.
You can stop reading resistance as failure, in others, and in yourself.
You can start reading it as information for the next iteration.
This is one of the most freeing shifts neuroscience offers.
So what is resistance actually telling us?
Very often, it points to one thing: the personal relevance is missing.
The brain hasn't yet been given a reason to spend its energy here.
There are two places you can build that relevance.
First, familiarity. When you connect a new idea to something the brain already knows, it processes more easily — and what is easy to process feels safer and more inviting (Reber, Schwarz, & Winkielman, 2004). You lower the cost of paying attention.
Second, usefulness. When people can see how something applies to their own life, their own goals, their own outcomes, interest rises and engagement follows (Hidi & Renninger, 2006; Hulleman & Harackiewicz, 2009). Researchers found that simply helping learners connect material to their own lives raised both interest and performance — most of all for the people who were least sure they could succeed.
The people most likely to resist are often the people most hungry to be reached.
They just need the bridge built in their direction.
So the next time you meet resistance, try a different question.
Instead of "Why won't they get this?" but maybe.. "Where is the relevance to them not yet visible?"
Resistance was never a wall.
Read closely, it's a map.. showing you exactly where the next bridge needs building.
