There's a strange moment happening with neuroscience right now.
More people than ever know words like:
Dopamine, ‘prefrontal’,neuroplasticity.
And I love that people are interested.
But I also see something else happen that can disconnect us from our own intuition and wisdom….
knowing more neuroscience words doesn't necessarily mean we understand more ‘neuroscience’ (in its truest sense).
Because what I see happen is that instead of asking:
What am I actually observing here?.. In this flesh-body-moving human…
we start trying to fit what we think is happening into the neuroscience vocabulary.
And there's another piece to this..
I sometimes see people override something they know deeply and intuitively about what is needed in a moment… because they believe the science is telling them to say or do something else.
- Their years of experience are telling them something.
- Their body… an incredible pattern-recognition system.. is picking up information.
- They can ‘feel something’ in the room, or in the person they’re interacting with.
But instead of staying with their sense of knowing, and energetic attunement, they switch to an explanation or words from neuroscience.
I don’t want science to do that to us.. I don’t want it to move us away from an intelligence that is beyond words, beyond explanation.
This is why I begin all of my courses by helping people tune back into their own deepest knowing. Their highest intelligence.
( I often call it a Wisdom module, or something like that).
Science is here to help us explore our own embodied knowing more deeply.
So that we can open up to new questions about it.
To notice patterns and signals we may not have had awareness of or language for before.
Because eventually, if we only collect phrases, frameworks, acronyms and vocabulary, everyone's teaching starts sounding similar. And it gets harder for the people we’re trying to teach to pay attention to us, because they’ve heard it before.
Dopamine menus, amygdala hijack, fight-flight-etc..
Again none of this is bad or wrong..
It’s just that as these concepts and get more popular, they can start making us sound less like our own voice, with our own incredibly unique way of understanding, observing and teaching.
After almost two decades of studying and measuring nervous systems, I continue to be so m much more interested in mechanisms than terminology.
When you understand what's actually happening underneath the words...
you can bring science more naturally into your voice… into the observations and patterns you've spent years noticing in human beings.
And then something starts to glimmer…
You start to notice that you don’t necessarily need neuroscience language (even though you still have it in the background)..
You can explain and teach in a way that feels grounded in science and also uniquely yours.
To me, that is what neuroscience can do for us: expand our intelligence, not move us away from our deep knowing..
