Your nervous system is part of someone else's environment.
And their nervous system is part of yours.
Every time we interact, we're exchanging information through our words, voices, facial expressions, movements, and patterns of attention.
And our brain-body systems are responding to those signals, often outside of conscious awareness.
These exchanges are happening in both directions:
We are continually influencing the very environments that are influencing us.
What this means when we're working with
- groups of people,
- classrooms,
- coaching sessions,
- leadership meetings,
- community gatherings.
Each person arrives with a nervous system shaped by their own history, experiences, and expectations.
And as they interact, patterns begin to emerge.
Patterns of attention, participation, emotional expression, and response.
These patterns can influence whether people feel able to:
- ask questions,
- share ideas,
- take risks, or
- explore unfamiliar possibilities.
This is one of the reasons I love sharing the ‘vibrational science’ of the collective field.
The dynamic, living system of signals and responses that emerges when nervous systems interact.
We each have the capacity to influence the conditions in which other people learn, grow, and change.
Through:
- the signals we emanate into a room or online space
- the way we hold ourselves in order to truly listen and respond.
- the serve-and-return patterns we help create and reinforce.
And when we become more aware of these processes, we have a chance to engage in them with more intentionality
Wishing you ripples of regulation in the systems you touch,
Stefanie
