As humans, we are born with nervous systems that learn about navigating the world through our experiences with other nervous systems.
And this continues throughout our lives.
Something that has come up again and again through the decades of my work presenting, researching and studying the science of human learning, growth and potential is that the idea of self-regulation or self-leadership only really works when we bring in another nervous system beyond that ‘self’.
Which means something I find incredibly beautiful…
When we help another human being, we may be helping them develop capacities they can carry into experiences we will never be part of.
When we - as a coach, spouse, parent, teacher, guide.. Help someone experience themselves as capable of learning something difficult, or finding a new way to navigate their stress or recover from setbacks.
.. we are co-creating experiences that become part of another person’s brain and nervous system circuitry..
Over time, that learning can influence what they notice, what they expect, and what they feel capable of doing. And this can ripple into their own relationships, communities, families..
This is something I truly appreciate about the work so many of you do.
The experiences you help create today can become part of how another human being navigates tomorrow.
In our collectively dysregulated and reactive world, I believe this matters now more than ever.
Thank you for your nervous system contributions,
For those of you who want to bring more of this understanding into your work, I created a micro-course to help you understand and explain the neuroscience of regulation, so you can help others recognize and develop more of their own nervous system range, repertoire and adaptiveness.
Here are three modules inside Teach the Nervous System:
- Module 2 : The Multidimensional State Map: Discover a richer way to understand nervous system states, moving beyond simplified categories to recognize the many dimensions of human regulation.
- Module 3 : Co-Regulation First: Explore how our own nervous system signals influence the people around us, and why our presence becomes part of the conditions in which others learn and grow.
- Module 9: Becoming the Signal: Learn to recognize yourself as an instrument of regulation, and how the vibrations and signals you bring into an interaction can influence another nervous system.
Inside, you'll learn to:
- Understand the neuroscience behind regulation and adaptive responses.
- Explain what's happening beneath emotions and behavior.
- Translate complex brain science into language people can understand and use.
Use it to help people recognize the value of your work, build greater buy-in, and develop more agency in their own lives.
