i love that brains can change. I get excited to talk about neuroplasticity.
But something I've learned over many years studying and teaching the biology of human transformation and performance is that..
Cheerleading or over-positivity about 'you can re-wire your brain!' can turn people off.
Why?
Because it doesn't feel like it's describing their actual reality.
When someone hears:
“you have the capacity to grow, shift, and develop”
… and their lived experience has been one of:
repeated effort,
limited results,
and a system that keeps defaulting back to the same patterns…
…there's a mismatch.
The nervous system registers that mismatch and dismisses it as irrelevant or inaccurate information.
What I often hear from people is that 'amazing ability' to re-wire our brain and update our behavior patterns..
feels like it's for someone else.
Someone who:
hasn't tried as hard,
or failed as specifically,
or carried as much.
But when you talk about the dark side..
when you describe what it actually feels like when:
we are having a reaction that doesnt' fully fit the situation
when we recognize that we have a history you didn't choose..
when it feels like past experiences still have an effect on us
and you help describe the mechanics underneath all of that..
… something different happens.
People start to feel like they're really included in the conversation… Because now the information is describing their experience.
That's 'biological relevance'. And sometimes the only way to create it is to start in the shadow.
Why it's harder than most people teach
A lot of content about mindset, growth, and human development leaves this stuff out:
Yes, we have the capacity to update.
The brain-body system is genuinely plastic. We can, over time, build new responses and expand what feels possible.
And.
It requires sustained effort, which the nervous system experiences as a real metabolic cost. And when the gap between effort and outcome feels too large, systems in the brain Neuro-chemically shut us down from wanting to keep going.
That flat, heavy, what's the point feeling? That's a cost-benefit system running in real time.
And it doesn't run in isolation: Our capacity for change is shaped by our past.. by what our system learned was safe, possible, and worth attempting.
It's shaped by:
chronic stress,
social structures, and
the accumulated weight of experiences that taught the body what to expect.
Instead of dismissing these as 'excuses'… we can recognize that they are more univeral than that. They are biology.
This is why the "just shift your mindset" or “just breathe” messages often don't resonate with the people who most need it.
Framing growth without the darkness makes a message not feel real for many people... often the people who might need nervous system tools the most.
In tomorrow's email, we'll go into what that means for how you teach - and a few questions we can ask to help us reach more people by expanding our view to include the shadows.
With deep respect for your journey,
Stefanie
If you want the neuroscience, the language patterns, and the teaching strategies that spark that kind of deep resonance and Nervous System Agency, Teach the Nervous System is where we do this.
Modules include:
The Resistant Regulator Deep-Dive — the neuroscience of why the people you most want to reach shut down, and the three specific conditions that open them back up without triggering more resistance. This is the dark side, made actionable.
The #1 reframe that instantly earns trust — including why "calm down" can function as a threat signal, and what to say instead that works with the biology rather than against it.
People inside the course continuously let me know that they're pausing mid-module to copy down phrases to use with their own clients and their own content, and that they are noticing new possibilities and conversations opening because of it.
Yes! that's exactly what it's built for.
9 modules. Scientific authority you can use immediately. $44. Lifetime access.
