These things are changing people's lives every day.
But what I have observed over many years, is that these incredibly powerful tools are sometimes explained in ways that either:
a) offer something too generic ("improve your life")
b) sound more like a "soft skill"
...while missing out on language that describes what they actually offer:
biologically meaningful transformation.
I have also noticed over the years, that explaining some of the 'mechanics' underneath these tools does something else that can really make a difference:
Give someone a technique and they can repeat it.
Give them the mechanics underneath... why a long exhale settles the system, why feeling safe with another person shifts the response ...and they can build with it.
It's like the difference between following a recipe and understanding why certain flavors belong together.
One helps a person make a single dish. The other lets them invent their own.
Or learning music by memorizing notes versus understanding why those notes create a feeling. Once you know why, you can improvise.
Because of how much I have seen this make a difference in people's lives over almost two decades...I get very excited about helping others see nervous system and personal growth tools this way... 🙂
When people get a glimpse of the architecture, they don't need to follow specific steps, relying on someone to always lay them out..
they get to start composing... adapting the work to whoever or whatever is in front of them, making it their own.
A small experiment for this weekend:
Pick a practice you use, or guide people through.
Before you walk through it, see if you can get a glimpse of the why underneath it ... words or a feeling of what's happening in the body or the nervous system.
Notice what happens when you let your mind get curious about the mechanism (even if you don't have all the answers).
