One of the things I’ve had the honor of working with over the years is triangulated data*
*nerd alert 🙂
..bringing together:
1) what people experience and self-report,
2) what we can observe through different measurement tools, and
3) what we can see happening physiologically.
.. as they go through learning, growth and change.
When we get a chance to explore human behavior through all of those perspectives, it can give us a much richer picture of the patterns, systems and influences that are happening within someone’s experience.
In Week 3, we’ll look at a different type of brain activity through the lens of why change can be so hard... even when we genuinely want something to change.
And we’ll explore something I find especially powerful when we are trying to improve our own lives, or help another human being do that for themselves:
Some of the patterns we think are weaknesses or defects may actually serve an important purpose within our own unique neurological fingerprint.
We’ll explore:
- The brain’s drive to conserve energy: why familiar patterns can be metabolically efficient, and why moving beyond them can require more from the brain-body system.
- The brain activity beneath change: I’ll walk you through another type of brain activity I’ve observed and what it can reveal about the different ways human beings navigate challenge, learning and adaptation.
- The purpose within the pattern: how something that looks like a limitation in one context may reflect an adaptation, sensitivity or way of processing that serves an important function in another.
- Your unique neurological fingerprint: how differences in the way we process and respond are part of the diversity of intelligence human beings bring into the world.
You’ll begin practicing how to:
Look beneath a pattern before deciding what it means.
Instead of immediately seeing resistance, struggle or difficulty as something that needs to be fixed, we’ll get curious about what the brain-body system may be doing... and why.
Getting even small glimpses into these brain-activity patterns can create powerful aha moments for understanding ourselves and the people we are trying to help.
And from there, you’ll begin developing more nuanced, compassionate and scientifically grounded language for explaining change.
Language that helps people understand themselves more deeply, while still strengthening their capacity to grow, adapt and move into new possibilities.
This is what I want the Academy to help coaches, leaders and helping professionals do again and again: see more deeply into human patterns... and use neuroscience to tap into intelligence that can sometimes be hidden when we don't know what we're actually seeing.
If you’ve been thinking about joining us, I would love to have you there.
