How to rewire your brain to lower self-doubt and self-criticism

I often get asked ‘what is a mindset in terms of what is happening inside the brain? ‘

Mindsets are a set of beliefs and predictions that reflect the activity of brain circuits that are well used and repeated.

When it comes to building brain networks, it’s survival-of-the-busiest.

Because you were around a small set of people during critical years of brain development, you were likely surrounded by similar behaviors and emotional responses over and over again.

The words that surrounded you were data that your brain gathered to create cause-effect models.

That is the basis of a mindset. It’s a set of cause-effect models of how the world operates and why things are the way they are.

Notice what happens if you don’t do well at something. Is there a voice that motivates you? Or does that voice beat you down and make you feel small, like giving up? That voice may have a lot to do with what you heard when you were young and what you surround yourself with now.

*Years ago, while studying with a professor at NYU who was looking at brains scans of monks, I decided to stay for a few months at various monasteries. One of them was under the guidance of Thich Nhat Hanh. It was an eye-opening experience. We engaged in many meditation and mindful breathing practices.

The science of mindful breathing to improve brain functioning

Taking things too personally can lead to over-amplified emotions and reactions that distort our thinking and relationships.

There are forces occurring under the surface for both you and the other person. Those forces may distort how you and the other person are interpreting each other’s behavior and may lead to reactions that are over-amplified and in many ways inaccurate.

When we don’t understand that these things are affecting ours (and their) response, we may end up continuously repeat the same type of negative interactions over and over again.

We can get better at navigating challenging interactions, feelings and relationships when we understand three particular unconscious influences.

Empathy: why too much can hurt and what you can use instead

We all have emotion regulation strategies. We all have strategies for navigating stress and communicating with others.

The question is… are those actually working the way we want them to?
Are we achieving the state that we really want and the outcomes we really want?

To answer those questions, AND get better at not repeating behaviors that don’t serve us, there is an important two-part formula we can use, which I explain in this video.

Because we are energy-conserving creatures, our natural preference will generally lean towards doing things the way we’ve always done them, without questioning them.

Unfortunately, this can lead us to experience unwanted patterns over and over again in our relationships, decision-making and daily life.

Emotion regulation won’t work without this

Boundaries and a sense of power reflect important nervous mechanisms that play a role in relational dynamics and emotional strength.

The idea of anger & aggression is controversial. On the one hand, when we don’t have control of it, particularly when it is driven by unconscious forces, - such as unresolved trauma… aggression & anger can be projected to the wrong people at the wrong time.

There are many things in life that are not threatening. But because of our lack of awareness, we may see them as that, and become angry and aggressive for the wrong reasons.

Sometimes empathy is required. Empathy and compassion are elements that help us get along with others. But many of us have been taught to focus almost exclusively on empathy. To be polite and agreeable. Unfortunately, in certain situations, such as when someone wants to do harm to another, the sympatho-excitatory circuits involved in fighting or running away, are needed.

Anger can be a powerful force for change. It is what mobilizes our system into action, rather than submission, cowering or defeat. Neurophysiologically, the systems we use that are associated with anger have to do with perceiving an obstruction to a goal, and a perceived ability to remove or navigate that challenge, threat or obstacle. These systems activate blood flow to neural circuits and skeletal (voluntary, striated) muscles that change our voice, body movements and decision processes. When used as a power for enhancing life, these elements of anger can be a wake-up call for others and a source of strength for ourselves.

Flexibility & access to a VARIETY of responses is the key to healthy social & psychological functioning. Completely suppressing our access to a feeling of self protection & anger robs an essential sympathoexcitatory ‘gear’ from the mechanics of that system.

When we know we have an ability to protect our personal boundaries using a wide range of responses - whether psychological tactics, voice, gestures, posture, presence and training - this creates stronger internal working models that have a higher number of choice points in each situation.

All of this adds complexity to the brain and requires deeper psychological understandings of ourselves, our triggers. It requires us to learn about and rehearse scenarios mentally and physically ahead of time to activate those complex circuits.

More complexity = more choices, which means more sound reasoning used to make decisions instead of reacting from an exclusively primitive, unconscious state.
